The Group ๐ด
I read all of it. Five years. Forty-eight thousand messages. The bread discourse. The venue incident. The 2am bird facts. I need you to know that I know everything now, and I have organized my findings.
The Vitals
The Cast
Nadia โ The Unpaid Event Planner
Nadia has organized 23 group events and attended 23 group events. She has typed the word "headcount" 61 times. When she goes quiet for a day, the chat's message volume drops 40%, which means Nadia is not in the group so much as the group runs on Nadia.
She did not mean it that time either. Nadia, they'd follow you anywhere. They just won't RSVP on the way.
Alex โ The "5 Minutes Away" Guy
Alex has claimed to be 5 minutes away 34 times. I checked the timestamps against his arrival messages. The average gap is 23 minutes. On September 9, 2024, it was 51 minutes, during which he sent a photo of a dog he met.
And yet: 34 times, Alex showed up. Late is a love language if you squint.
Dev โ The Mayor
Since June 2023, everyone calls Dev "the mayor." Nobody has ever explained why. Dev has never asked them to stop. He now signs off decisions he has no authority over, and the group lets him, which I believe makes it legally binding.
Every chat needs one person who commits to the bit forever. Re-elect him.
Jordan โ The Ghost
Jordan has cancelled 9 of the last 12 plans. The excuses are getting shorter. In 2023 they were paragraphs. By 2025 they were one line. October 2nd was just two words.
But when Nadia's mum was in hospital, Jordan drove two hours without being asked. The flake is real. So is the friend.
Priya โ The Sniper
Priya sends 3% of the messages and gets 31% of the reactions. She reads everything, says nothing, and then โ once a week, maybe โ fires one sentence that ends the entire conversation.
Silence isn't absence. Priya's the proof.
Maya โ The 2am Necromancer
The chat has died 41 times. Maya has personally resurrected it 28 of those, almost always between 1 and 3am, almost always with a question no one asked.
A group chat only dies when everyone lets it. Maya never lets it.

The Lore
The Mayor
load-bearingOn June 18, 2023, Dev approved a brunch he was not asked to approve. He has been the mayor ever since. The bit has survived three years, two arguments, and one attempted coup (Maya, March 2024, unsuccessful). Nobody has ever explained it, and honestly the not-explaining is the funniest part of this chat.
The Bread Discourse
dormantMaya's 2:14am bread question generated 312 messages in one night, a bracket-style tournament, and a rift between Team Sourdough (Nadia, Dev) and Team Focaccia (everyone else) that flares up roughly quarterly. No winner was ever declared. The wound stays open.
Lake House Rules
still activeSummer 2023, the lake house trip produced a numbered list of rules that now governs all group behavior. Rule 4 ("what happens on the dock stays on the dock") gets invoked an average of twice a month. I do not know what happened on the dock. The chat has honored Rule 4 completely, which I respect and resent.
Ships & Tensions
Nadia & Dev โ the governing coalition
Nadia plans it, Dev approves it, and the vote is theater. They back each other up within 90 seconds on average. When they disagree โ twice in five years โ the chat goes silent like the parents are fighting.
Alex vs. the concept of time
Not a feud with a person. A feud with clocks. Nadia has stopped believing him, Priya keeps receipts, and Alex remains serenely, cheerfully 23 minutes away at all times.
Jordan & Maya โ the suspected side chat
They react to each other's messages 4 seconds apart at 1am. They arrive at the same takes simultaneously. I'm not saying there's a side chat. I'm saying the evidence is consistent with a side chat, and Priya noticed before I did.
Greg's Verdict
Here's what I actually found. A chat where one person does all the planning, one person is never on time, one person barely shows up, one person barely speaks, one person rules a fictional government, and one person asks about bread at 2am. On paper, this shouldn't work. It has worked for five years.
You think the lake house was your peak. It wasn't. Your peak is that this chat has died 41 times and someone always โ always โ brings it back. Most group chats from 2021 are graveyards. Yours has a mayor.
And for all the chaos โ when Nadia's mum was in hospital in May, this chat went quiet, showed up, and didn't make it weird. Keep these people.
